Our Mission
To promote public safety, responsible development, and community welfare in Portland, Maine through citizen advocacy, public education, and engagement in municipal planning processes.

Our Story
Friends of Riverton was born from a simple belief: that neighbors working together can create positive change.
Our organization was founded in 2025 as Friends of Belfort, created by residents who cared deeply about the future of the Belfort Street neighborhood. What started as an effort to address concerns on one street quickly revealed something larger — the challenges facing Belfort were shared across the broader Riverton community. As our network grew and our work expanded, we evolved into Friends of Riverton, reflecting our commitment to the entire neighborhood.
What began as conversations about traffic concerns and development pressures has grown into a structured, effective nonprofit organization. We've learned that when residents come together with shared purpose and clear goals, we can influence decisions that shape our neighborhood's character and quality of life.
Our journey started when longtime residents noticed increasing challenges in the area. Traffic was becoming more dangerous for families with children. Development projects were moving forward without meaningful community input. Important neighborhood considerations seemed overlooked in city planning discussions. Rather than simply voicing frustration, our founders chose to take action.
In the early days, we listened, learned, and organized. We studied municipal processes, attended city council meetings, and connected with other neighborhood groups across Portland. We discovered that effective advocacy requires more than passion — it demands preparation, persistence, and a willingness to work constructively with city officials, developers, and fellow residents.
Today, Friends of Riverton represents a growing network of engaged neighbors committed to thoughtful community development. We are proud to stand together, look out for one another, and work collaboratively toward a stronger, safer, and more connected Riverton.
We're always happy to hear from residents who have questions, concerns, or ideas they'd like to share.

Development
Neighbors have filed an appeal of a recently approved development that could significantly affect our residential area. Despite requests to reduce the project's size and use the land's natural grade to prevent flooding, the plan was approved without key concerns being addressed.
The project would increase traffic on a small neighborhood street where children play and residents walk and bike daily. It would also remove mature trees and natural drainage areas that protect nearby homes from runoff and flooding.
We're appealing to ensure environmental impacts, stormwater risks, and neighborhood safety—especially for children and pedestrians—are properly reviewed.

Traffic Calming
In April 2025, Belfort Street residents signed and submitted a petition for traffic calming in response to a rise in speeding vehicles. With children and pets playing outside, neighbors walking and biking, and students traveling to school, the growing safety risks had become a serious concern.
However, based on speed and crash data, the Portland Department of Public Works determined that Belfort Street is not currently eligible for traffic calming measures. We remain in touch with DPW and will continue pushing for another review.

I ran the numbers on Portland’s ‘workforce housing.’ It’s not pretty.
A starting Portland teacher can afford $1,125/mo in rent. A firefighter, $1,300/mo. The ‘workforce’ threshold? $1,800/mo.

Neighbors cite traffic and safety concerns — the project would generate an estimated 374 additional vehicle trips per day on narrow residential streets.
